Colloquium 2013

The Industry Interaction Cell of Indian Institute of Management Indore ( IIM- I) conducted the inaugural session of Colloquium- 2013: Venture capital and private equity ( VC& PE).

The conclave, the first of its kind in Central India, saw participation from some of the most well- known names in the ( VC& PE) domain in India.

The panel of guest speakers included Sanjay Anandram, advisor – Ojas Ventures and Venture Partner- Seed fund, Ajeet Khurana, angel investor, Mumbai Angels Network, Guhesh Ramanathan, COO, NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore and Karthikeyan S, director, PE Insights. Accompanying them at the guest lecture series were: Dr Preet Pal Thakur, an IIM Indore alumnus and vice- president, Asian Healthcare Fund and Ashish Dave of Mumbai Angels Network.

In his welcome address, IIM Indore Director Dr N Ravichandran praised the initiative taken by the industry interaction cell of the institute for organising the conclave saying such events encourage and help budding entrepreneurs to find the right path.

While addressing the crowd of management students, Anandaram said that one must have passion to become an entrepreneur.

He cited Walt Disney, Charlie Chaplin and Steve Jobs to enlighten student community on attributes of entrepreneurial mind- set.

Next in the series of speakers was Ramanathan, who spoke about several stages such as Idea, Strategic and Systems building that he has been able to witness while working with NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore.

The most intellectually stimulating section of the conclave was the panel discussion on ‘ Management intervention/ expertise for the portfolio companies: Good or Bad? The discussion revolved around the idea of constructive management intervention for portfolio companies in a VC- PE context and explored areas such as performance of companies pre and post VC funding, operational v/ s financial controls and finally a critical comparison between VC backed and non- VC backed firms.

The second half of the conclave saw talks by Khurana, who shared his insights on how to get the business offground and importance of acquiring right customers for early stage entrepreneurs, and Karthikeyan who enlightened the participants with the career paths in private equity.
